A four-week intensive summer program in New York City where students learn classical architectural design principles, including composition, proportion, drawing, and urban form through studio coursework, on-site study of classical buildings, and visits to architectural offices.
The Summer Studio in Classical Architecture introduces students pursuing careers in architecture to essential skills in classical design. Over four weeks, students build a foundation through coursework in classical elements and principles of composition, literature of classical architecture, proportion and geometry, traditional urban form, observational and analytical drawing and rendering, and study of precedent. The curriculum is structured within a classical design studio and culminates in a design project for a new classical building. Studio work is complemented by on-site study of classical buildings throughout New York City and its environs, with visits to architectural offices providing direct engagement with leading design firms. Coursework is taught by architects and faculty active in classical and traditional design practice. Upon successful completion, students receive the ICAA's Certificate in Classical Architecture.
