McHenry County's Prairieview Education Center runs summer camps where children explore prairie, savanna and wetland habitats through nature interpretation programs, bird identification, animal tracking, and outdoor activities at Silver Creek Conservation Area.
Opened in 1999, Prairieview Education Center serves thousands of McHenry County residents annually through free and low-cost nature interpretation programs and summer camps. Children participate in guided activities that include identifying bird species, finding animal tracks, observing wildlife with binoculars, and exploring the natural communities of Silver Creek Conservation Area. The center features indoor activities in its Sun Room with puzzles, games, a reading nook, puppet theater, microscopes, binoculars, and exploration stations for butterflies, birds and rocks. The 10,000 square foot facility also offers school field studies, scout programs, and staff-guided outdoor experiences.
