A six-week multidisciplinary summer day camp for youth ages 4-13 in Brooklyn where campers learn dance, music, drama, writing, and stagecraft while collaborating to create and perform an original theatrical production for families and friends.
Asase Yaa's Children's Summer Arts Camp runs for six weeks each summer as a day program from 8 AM to 5 PM. Campers ages 4-13 engage in instruction across multiple disciplines including writing, dancing, music, singing, drama, set building, costumes, choreography, staging, lighting, and sound. Professional teaching artists volunteer alongside camp staff to mentor youth. Daily activities include morning circle gatherings, games, arts and crafts, field trips, and celebration of African Flag Day. The camp culminates in a final day theatrical presentation created entirely by the campers. Over nineteen years, the camp has maintained this tradition of youth-produced original live performances based on themes drawn from African stories and cultures.
